Move Closer Stay Longer
Wow what an amazing book for motivation, confidence building, listening to yourself and so much more. I borrowed this book and now am looking to buy it in Australia. I would like to have it to reflect back on when I go backwards instead of going forward. Great read, nice and easy and quick. Thanks for this amazing book Stephanie!

Fear
Thank you, Dr. Burns for this book! I have read it at least three times. I am working to get through fear - moving closer staying longer so that I can ride my horse. I was seriously injured in a riding accident on another horse a year ago. Slow, steady, safe. You are like a friend, Stephanie - if you could gain the courage and confidence with Nugget - I feel you with me and hear your voice. Thanks for being present from afar.
Hope to someday ride with you, Pat and Linda.

moving closer
For all of you who read this journal. I am the same person that made the entry in dec/05. JD(a.k.a junior)and I are now offical Parelli Level 1! we are cantering a bit and so many things that used to paralize me with fear are now in the netural area. I have even been able to do things with our other 2 horses, one a very dominate, very large paint. Buy the book and stay longer!! I have also developed enough courage to do the Labyrinth course, with the gifts Stef has to offer, I am ready to take the knowledge she has and move it into other areas of my life that could use some improvment and enhanced quality.

Move Closer, Stay Longer
December 2004

Hi, my name is Sandy Lewis, and until some great Parelli people crossed my path I was a horse coward!! As a child I was fearless with horses. Even as a young adult I rode rental horses with gusto (being somewhat dumb looking back). At about 50 or so I was able to finally realize my dream of owning my own horse!! As I met horse people, while looking for my first horse, I heard every horror story you could imagine. Along with all the " normal" dos and don'ts about horses. After 3 horses and a husband that was totally confused by my fear (he has no fear), I gave up on the whole idea. That is until I attended a clinic with my husband who was in the clinic with my first horse, he was totally into horses and Parelli by then.

I met Pat Mitchell at the clinic, a totally wonderful and easy to talk to person, who listened to my story and really understood my fear. She told me about your book, Move Closer, Stay Longer. I read it and was amazed that I was in that book. I was so happy that I wasn't just a sissy!!!! Maybe there was hope for me after all. And then through Pat Mitchell I heard of a horse that might be just what I needed: Junior, a 9 year old quarter gelding being offered for sale by, of all people, David Lichman. After zillions of emails, David assured me that Junior was it. So my wonderful husband took the time to trek all the way to Sacramento from So. Cal. David also requested I make a fear list from your format and send it ahead so he could work with me on the biggest ones. It was awesome!!! I got one on one coaching from a 5 star instructor, met his wonderful family, and came home with a great horse. (I found out later that my horse was Susan Pritchett's first foal and David brought him home from Pagosa).

Junior and I are making good progress and, although I still have some not so brave days, it is so fulfilling to groom and play with my own horse and not be filled with fear. I want to thank you for taking the time it takes and for your compassion; not many people today are willing to give so much so others can be successful. I also want to thank the wonderful Parelli people, Pat Mitchell and David Lichman. They also cared enough to want success for me. And I also want to thank my husband who stood behind me through it all. And of course, Pat and Linda, without whom none of this would be possible. Thank you, Thank you!!! I am living my dream, learning, loving and moving forward with a partner, my horse.

April 2005

Just as a follow up to my December letter I wanted to let everyone know that Junior and I are still moving forward. I now ride him in my arena without fear, even at the trot. We are 2 tasks away from official level1 attainment. I still have some not so confident days, but I don’t beat myself up anymore. I am learning, I am happy! Thank you Stephanie

A must for everybody
I read both books of you and will recommend especially "Great lies we live by" to everybody I know. I really started to use the unique strategie for remebering things or to take notes or to do things one by one, not one big bite!

I was very impressed by the book "Move closer stay longer" how believes and fears can distroy what you really want. It opened my eyes to small things I didn`t see before. Things they kept me away from what I want. Although I am really passioned about horses and I thought I had no fears... sometimes I had fear but didn't want to feel it. Now I know it's fear and I know what to do in this situation!

Well, I really appreciate that people like you share so important information, thank you so much!

Move Closer, Stay Longer
After reading this very enlightening book, I realized that the strategies for overcoming fear are very similar to the way I gradually expand a horse's comfort zone. I had to slap myself upside the head for not having thought of applying horse training methods to myself! Thanks for the insight.
I have completed the groundwork portion of Level 1 and Level 2 up to Stage 3 with my mare, but have not been able to force myself to mount her since she bucked me off 2 years ago (pre-Parelli) and I was badly hurt.
With the strategies given in Move Closer, Stay Longer, I am now confident that I will be able to overcome this fear. Also realized that she is just as afraid as I am (bad experiences being ridden by former owners with big bits and hands that close quickly) and I'm sure that using these techniques will work for both of us at the same time. Am going to start by standing on a box to groom her and work up to sitting on her back bareback, as you did.
I am desperate to ride again and get that red string. Thank you for giving me the tools to make that a possibility.

move closer
I immediately recognized techniques I had used to start riding after three back surgeries. I will be useing those same skills to start back again soon. It is great to see great strides made with small steps.

Great Lies We Live By
This book contains a number of common sense ideas that we all know but never think about. I recently passed the book on to one of the members of our local school board. He passed it around to other members of the board. The ripples this book is creating are tremendous.

Great Lies We Live By
This book was great! I enjoyed it so much. I could relate to the stories and I find myself using the techniques from the book all the time. Now when I want to learn something new I hear Stephanie's voice in my head. It usally says something like "don't ask how you feel silly, you know that answer", or "I'll just do this for 10 minutes, then I will see if I want to keep doing it". I gave it to my mom to read and she liked it so much she told a bunch of her friends about it.
